Gala Harriers – Press release: gold, silver and bronze for junior harriers
February 15th, 2010On Saturday and Sunday the Bank of Scotland Under 15/17/20 Scottish Indoor Championships returned to Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall and several junior Gala Harriers made the return journey, returning with an impressive full set of medals between them from the first day’s action.
In an event which is open to allcomers, Saturday’s action saw Demi Yorke and Jo and Rowan Marr coming up against some of their usual rivals from right across the UK as well as some fresh ones in the under 15 events. Their efforts paid off to excellent effect.
Jo raced first in the 60 metres and ran well to come 3rd in a tough heat in 8.88 seconds but unfortunately not quite fast enough to progress further.
Demi’s first event was the U15 60m and she won her first heat in 8.33, won her semi final in 8.14 and followed this up with a superb victory in the final in 8.16, taking her to a well-deserved gold medal. With a short break for some remedial massage on a strain injury, Demi stepped up once again in the 200m and with tired legs just qualified for the A final. With a slow time in the heat she was landed with the difficult lane 5 but had an excellent start, maintained the lead and was just pipped into silver medal position by 1/100th of a second to bring her personal medal haul to two. Her time in the final was a new personal best for the 200m, 27.16.
Rowan’s preferred distance of 1500 attracted some very experienced young racers but he has developed into a very mature competitor. He ran a very hard fought race and achieved a personal best indoor time for himself of 4.41.90, helping himself to a bronze medal in the process – a richly deserved outcome.
Sunday saw action for the under 17 and under 20s and for the Harriers, Sophie Elder and Sean Grant pulled on the green and white vest. (Results are not posted yet.)
Next Saturday, 20th February sees the National Cross Country championships at Callendar Park, Falkirk

HI
wonder if you could help, a bit of a long shot however here goes, tash was competing in the same races as Demi on the 13th Feb and a photographer handed me a card. I have misplaced it and was wondering if anyone handed one to yourselves too.
congratulations to Demi the 200m was a great race for the three of them, the time were so close for them all, they should be all really proud of their effort and ability.
Kind regards
Sue Gardner (Tash Gardners mum)
