East District Relays 2009
October 12th, 2009The cross country running season kicked off officially on Saturday with the first of the East District events, the relays, held on Saturday in East Lothian.
With no juniors available because of other commitments with the mid term break, 2 senior teams made their way to Meadowmills Sports Centre near Prestonpans, where a testing and undulating grassy course covering 4 kilometres awaited them.
The senior ladies’ team was represented by new ladies’ captain Rachel Fagan, most improved athlete of 2008/9 Fiona Shepherd and the ever-consistent Eileen Nicol. Their joint efforts achieved a solid finish just inside the top half of the 26 starting teams. Rachel’s opening leg in 16 minutes 7 seconds was the fastest of the three, with Fiona in 18.05 and Eileen in 18.56, placing them 13th team out of 26.
The senior men also made a solid start to the winter season with the team of four placing 24th out of 59 starting teams. Derrick Brydon kicked off first in 15.38 and passed on to Euan Jardine who ran just a fraction over 14 minutes in 14.01. Men’s captain Magnus Inglis followed in 15.46 and the team effort finished with a strong anchor keg from Gregor McAneny in 14.46.
The season continues on Saturday 17 October at Stirling University with the East District Cross Country League where both teams look to improve upon their first outing.
