Harriers Hill Runners Slide Downhill to Success
August 31st, 2009Hill running just isn’t like other forms of athletics. I don’t imagine Ussain Bolt was advised that he might do better to finish his race by slithering along on his backside or that it was suggested to Jessica Ennis that she check for sheep ticks after winning heptathlon gold. But this was exactly the advice half a dozen members of the Gala Harriers Hill Running group were given before setting out on the Lomonds of Fife race this afternoon. The testing route over 11 miles of hill, moorland, forest and bog finishes with an almost suicidally steep descent off the West Lomond, which the majority of competitors find easiest to negotiate in a recumbent position! The sheep ticks are an unfortunate, but not uncommon hazard for all who venture into the Scottish hills.
It must have been advice that was well heeded however, as the group returned to the Borders with 2 prizes. First Harrier home, and winner of the ladies race in 2hours 4 minutes was Rachel Fagan. Just behind her was Derek Brydon in 2hrs 5 mins, with Eb Rooney (Lauderdale) not far behind in 2hrs 11 mins. Paul Morris was well pleased to come home in 2hrs 24mins, with Alison Wilson taking the prize for second lady vet in 2hrs 26mins. Ian (Wilson?) brought the group home in 2hrs 30 mins.
The day was considered a real success even by those not in the prizes – great views, good company, a challenging and entertaining course, and finally excellent post run refreshments – all for just £5. Whether it would have been so enjoyable in the rain of the previous day is another matter!
