Recent Action
August 10th, 2009The Border Games circuit dominates the summer athletic headlines but Gala Harriers have been competing on a variety of different fronts this past month with some success, as well as training for late season marathons and half marathons, the peoples’ 10k at the World Athletic championships in Berlin and veteran road race championships.
A good turn out of Harriers enjoyed the very successful Kelso 10k in July with Gillian Duncan winning the ladies race and on 25th July the Musselburgh 10k was held in blustery but dry conditions, attracting excellent runs from Graeme Murdoch who placed 5th in 33.18 and Gregor McAneny, 40th in 38.46.
Euan Jardine was selected for the Scottish team to compete in the Snowdon International Mountain Race in mid July, but had to call off due to injury.
And Bob Marshall, a relatively recent proud wearer of a Gala vest is sharpening up for the Scottish vets 10k road race championships on 16 August and has been using the weekly 5K Parkruns in Glasgow to do this. His 5K on 25th July was the ‘best on day’ performance in his age grade and in the same category, broke the course record by 1 minute 10 seconds!
Derek Fraser Says:
I took part in the Islay Half Marathon on 1/8/09 (my ninth time) it’s a agreat place to race. The Islay Half Marathon started in 1986 and involves a 13 mile 192yd run from the village of Bowmore on Islay out to Islay Airport and back in a circular route. I think we could pick up team prizes Male and female if we organised it for next year I would be happy to set it up if anyone is interested.

I also recently ran the Forth Road Bridge 10k (9/8/09)and was surprised to be the only Gala Harrier to be there. I would highly recommend this one, running a race over the bridge is different. A near fifteen minute torrential downpour two minutes after the race started was the only dampener. It has become one of the most popular races on the Scottish running calendar.
I tried my best to run well for the club.
