Scottish School Championship and Yetholm Hill Race

June 15th, 2009

The annual Scottish Schools Championships, always held towards the end of the summer term attracts young athletes of secondary school age from all over the country and this year the AVIVA sponsored event was held at Grangemouth last Friday and Saturday in perfect conditions for competition in both track and field.

Several young Gala Harriers representing their schools travelled across the Forth and recorded some very good performances which brought credit to both their schools and their club.

Kerri Sandilands, representing Earlston High ran her heart out in the heat of the Under 14 girls’ 1500 metres, winning it in a personal best time of 5 minutes 15.21 seconds. She couldn’t quite replicate this in the final but nevertheless came a creditable 5th in 5.18.29.

Again representing Earlston, Lucy Henderson-Morris ran a superb PB to finish third in her heat of the U16 1500m in a well run 5.08.39, then going on to finish 8th in the final in 5.14.51.

Sophie Elder, competing for Jedburgh Grammar placed third in her heat of the 200m in 27.45 and almost managed to repeat this excellent time in the final where she came 7th in 27.53.

Demi Yorke does nothing in half measure and was competing in both the U14 girls’ 100 m and the long jump. She qualified easily for the long jump final, went on to run a PB in her heat of the 100m in 12.98, jumped a season’s best of 4.91 metres in the final of the long jump to take first place and then won the 100m final in 13.24. Not a bad day’s work!

Well done to all the young athletes representing Borders schools.

The previous weekend saw a very different kind of effort over a very different terrain with the demanding Yetholm Hill Race from Halterburn on 6th June.

Shelagh King used it as a dress rehearsal for the Eildon Hill Race this weekend and came home as second woman in a solidly impressive time of 92.18, with Damon Rodwell as second man home in a fine 72 minutes.

The Eildon 2 Hills Race is on Saturday 20th June, starting at 3pm from the Greenyards. Entries can be on the day or via the Harriers website at galaharriers.com

    Bob Marshall Says:

…and at the other end of the athletics age spectrum, Bob Marshall won gold in his age group at the Scottish Veterans Track Championship at Pitreavie on Sunday (14/6/09) in the 5000m track race.
He “narrowly” missed his pb, set 32 years ago, by 4 minutes!!!

    Cheers Bob.
