Weekend Round-Up 9th & 10th May 2009

May 11th, 2009

Alice Haining returned from the Scottish junior hill running championships on Saturday with yet another trophy to her name, having retained the junior title she won last year over the slopes of Ben Lomond at Rowardennan, near Drymen.

In conditions that were more akin to a winter’s day in the hills, 15 year old Alice sped round the stiff 2 lap course in superb style, finishing in top place and beating several 19 year olds into the lower places.

Some of Alice’s older clubmates were also trying their hardest to echo her success on the snowy reaches of the Ben, none more so than Euan Jardine who put in a magnificent time of 1 hour 16 minutes and 45 seconds to take the bronze medal position in the senior race, just 4 minutes behind the joint leaders.

Also coming 3rd in her category of lady vet was Alice’s mum Leanne who was the second Harrier home in the senior race in an excellent 1.47.23. Only 2 ½ minutes behind her was Paul Morris in 1.49.58 and the ever-gutsy Shelagh King in 2.23.35 completed the set.

While the conditions were of the chilly kind at Loch Lomondside, they could have been described as wet and wild in Wishaw, where several young Harriers travelled on Saturday for the Scottish Athletics closed U15 and U17 track championships. The cold wind and drenching rain was not conducive to sparkling performances and indeed all Gala athletes struggled in the conditions, with Demi Yorke, Rowan Marr, Lucy Henderson-Morris and Kerry Sandilands competing well but not featuring in the final top places.

Rebecca Caswell of Edinburgh Athletic Club now trains with the Harriers at the track and she was rewarded with a silver medal in the Under 17 100m in 12.77.

Returning closer to home, Tommy Knox won the club’s annual Hollybush 10k on Sunday afternoon on the lovely out-and-back course from Gala Academy to the Rink Farm, in much more favourable conditions. Full results on previuos report as well as photos in gallery.

    Hello again.

Just a general note regarding the Black Rock 5. Its on Fri 22nd May at 7.30pm but pre entry is required with the closing date being this Wed (13th). I know the last 2 years we’ve run a minibus to this but I’m not sure of numbers or whether we are going to do this again. Can someone let me know if any plans are in place?
