Hill Running Group Enjoy Some Winter Sunshine

November 30th, 2008

More than a dozen hill runners braved sub zero temperatures on 22nd November to enjoy some glorious winter sunshine. The group who were enhanced by some welcome guests – mostly from the Limpers – set off from the car park at Bowhill and up the Duchess’ drive at around 9.30 am. At the edge of the woods we re-grouped in the sunshine before setting out across the open hillside. As we climbed out from the shelter, the gentle breeze stiffened, and there were occasional flakes of snow, making for a considerable drop in temperature. The early arrivals on the summit nevertheless did the decent thing, and not only waited for us all to regroup, but even gave the later arrivals a bit of a breather before setting off down.

Back at the forest edge, we were once more able to warm up in the sunshine, whilst sheltered from the wind, before heading back down the track to the car park. As we jogged down, we saw several parties of walkers setting out, well clad to keep out the cold, and with back packs no doubt containing food, hot drinks and emergency rations. They must have doubted the sanity of the scantily clad runners heading the other way, but most of us would be enjoying a hot bath before they even reached the top.

There was unanimous agreement that the run had been a success, and it was decided that another jaunt next month would be just what we all needed to help blow away the Xmas cobwebs. The next run is scheduled for 27th Dec; again meeting up at the Gala baths at 9am, then head off for a festive jog around the Eildons, probably setting off from the Rhymers stone at 9.20. I will confirm the starting point later.

    Hi folks,

I notice that there is a fell race at Rothbury on New Year’s day. Anyone interested in making the short trip for a bit of fun?
