Gala Hill Runners Return Safely

November 11th, 2008

On a day when hill running made it to the front pages of the national press for the first time in memory, the hill running group once again dodged the worst of the weather, and had a fine run out over Meigle hill. Whilst hundreds of runners were “unaccounted for” in the Cumbrian hills doing the OMM, nine harriers were equally unaccounted for, and having a perfectly nice time being blown around in the gales. The rain kept off until near the end however, and the greatest danger to anyone proved to be cows.

Rob McRirrick organised the route, and led us out from the swimming baths, over the Southern Upland Way, and then up to the ridge above Caddonfoot where we were nearly blown away. A lovely jog through the heather took us to just below the summit of the hill, but with the weather worsening we went for a lower level return to Gala. On the return leg various tactics were employed to deal with numerous fields of cows –with Rob winning the award for chivalry, and there was a tie for the one for cowardice.

Thanks for a great route on our own back door step Rob – I’m sure we’ll be back to do it again, aiming to “bag” the summit next time.

The next run is planned to be the Duchess’ drive at Bowhill on 22nd Nov. Robin Murray has agreed to lead us this time, and is rumoured to be busy looking at some variations to the “standard” route which is probably just over an hour long. This should allow the quicker ones amongst us to add some bits on if they wish. Meet at Gala pool at 9am to share transport, or 9.20 at the car park at Bowhill.
