Thirlestane Run 2008 and AGM Report

September 22nd, 2008

The impressive backdrop of Thirlestane Castle saw Gala Harriers in action again last Sunday on the 10th anniversary of this popular and extremely well-organised race by Lauderdale Limpers. The sun shone and conditions underfoot were perfect for both the 3K junior race and the 5 mile multi terrain senior route around the glorious castle grounds.

Kerry Sandilands in 11 minutes 48 seconds and Charlotte Brown not far behind in 12.10 started the afternoon well for the harriers and took the first two girls’ places in the junior run.

8 seniors lined up at the start of the attractive but challenging longer route alongside almost 90 other starters. Gregor McEneny was the first harrier home in 25th place in 33 minutes and
31 seconds with new club President Tony Lunn enjoying his first run as the high heid yin in 34.12. Alastair Lawrie was 36th in 35.38 and in rapid succession, the next 3 places were taken by Magnus Inglis (36.22), Melanie Goodson (36.23) and Graham Capper who finished in the same time but was just pipped on the line. Eileen Nicol completed a consistently steady
race in 39.10 and Shelagh King in a creditable 46.56.

The previous Thursday evening had seen the Harriers’ AGM in the Young Mens’ Club, Galashiels when retiring president Robin Murray handed over the baton to Tony Lunn after an impressive 2 year period at the helm. Successes by the junior squad and senior women in particular, as well as a fast developing coaching commitment from the club and a Development Plan underpinning all its activities has meant that the Harriers have a strong base on which to build future achievement and we wish Tony Lunn well in his time as President.

The next club event for Gala Harriers is the annual Ladhope handicap race on Saturday 4th October at 2pm, which marks the start of the cross country season.
