Henderson Report and Other News

September 15th, 2008

Harriers have been in action recently up and down the country over a variety of distances and terrain, dodging the showers
and coming up roses.

Two weeks ago, Euan Jardine secured a solid 8th place out of 93 in the Hawick Summer Festival 10K in 35 minutes 44
seconds. Next home for the Harriers was Martin Clarke who was an impressive 10th in 38.35 with clubmates Gerry Moss just
going under 50 minutes by 2 seconds and Dawn Grant 3 seconds over. Charlotte Brown won the Fun Run in the Hawick Summer Festival

Last Thursday saw 24 athletes compete for the club’s beautiful Henderson Trophy, named after J. W. Henderson who ran for
Gala Harriers in the early 1900s. The race comprises a sealed handicapped mile on the track at Tweedbank, followed by
almost 3 miles down by the Tweed in conditions which could best be described as squelchy. Fiona Shepherd, returning to
her midsummer form secured first place after the track race and then stormed home first on the cross country taking the
overall top place and the trophy. Second was Graeme Murdoch, who was 2nd in both elements and third Derrick Brydon. Of
special note was the performance of the night by young Rowan Marr who participated with some other juniors in the track
mile and who came home in 6th place overall in 5.27, beating some very experienced senior athletes by a considerable
margin.

Athletes also made the journey to Glasgow for the Fresh ‘n’ lo Great Scottish Run Half marathon on Sunday. Full Glasgow results not yet posted on website but if you can keep it in and add that a Gala athlete was also competing at the full marathon distance in Moray. Kate Jenkins won the womens’ race in a fabulous time of 3.02.06, just a short time after she’d won the Jersey Marathon in almost exactly the same time. She was 6th overall.

Harriers are reminded that it is the AGM of the club on Thursday 18 September in the Gala Young Mens’ Clubrooms at 7.30,
with a buffet provided.
