Glasgow, Stirling and Other News

September 15th, 2008

More athletic action over the past weeks has seen Gala Harriers of all ages busy clocking up the miles with some personal
bests being smashed at the weekend.

Two Sundays ago on the streets of Glasgow the conditions were perfect for racing a half marathon and suited Fiona
Shepherd who turned in a great run in 1 hour 44 minutes and 25 seconds. Illness had beset Pauline Ballantyne before and
during the race and she did well to finish in 1.56.12, while Louise Johnston completed her race in a creditable steady
2.09.05.

Last Sunday, the action moved to the streets of Stirling for the 8th race in the Grand Prix road race calendar and conditions
for the 10k race couldn’t have been kinder, with the course fast and flat and the weather cool and windless. Graeme
Murdoch in his last outing as retiring mens’ club captain celebrated in style by recording a personal best by 47 seconds,
finishing in a superb 33 minutes and 33 seconds. Katy Anderson also PB’d and her impressive finishing time of 38.24 was
enough to give her 6th placed woman. Only a handful of seconds later came Derrick Brydon, also in a grand PB time of
38.50 and Rachel Fagan completed the set in 40.41, just slightly over her PB.

Over the full marathon distance, Kate Jenkins had been competing in Jersey and Moray in recent weeks and recorded two
stunning and almost identical times of 3 hours 2 minutes and 6 seconds which was enough to give her victory in both
womens’ races and 6th place overall in Moray.

And finally, young Harriers were representing the Scottish Borders in a league match on Saturday in Carlisle with Gala’s
Emily Douglas, Sophie Elder, Annabel Hughes, Demi Yorke and Paul Ferguson flying the flag for their region. (Full results in
another report to be sent to you under separate cover.)

Harriers are again reminded that it is the AGM of the club on Thursday 18 September in the Gala Young Mens’ Clubrooms at
7.30, with a buffet provided.
