Yorke takes 3 Golds & Recent Results Round-UP
August 25th, 2008Chris Hoy and Usain Bolt may have been hogging the headlines in Beijing with their 3 gold medals apiece but slightly nearer to home it was young Gala Harrier Demi Yorke who bagged a trio of golds on Saturday at the Bank of Scotland age-group championships at Grangemouth. Her haul of medals mirrored two of Bolt’s in the 100m and 200m but she also added a third in the long jump, bettering her silver medal in that event last year.
Having been placed first in her heat in the 100m in 13.37 seconds, Demi stormed through the final and won it in 13.41 seconds. Her 200m final was won in a new personal best of 28.16, beating the runner up by just 4/100th of a second. But the long jump was the most testing of all, beating 14 other tough competitors with a superb leap of 4.70m.
And there were plenty of other great performances by young Gala athletes across the 2 days of the championships on both Saturday and Sunday.
Emily Douglas progressed through the heats of the Under 17 girls 100m in a PB of 13.16 in third place, and achieved a creditable 6th place in the final in 13.20. In the boys Under 13 800m, Rowan Marr, in his first full season of competition qualified in 3rd place in his heat in 2 minutes and 28.61 seconds and finished an excellent 5th in the final in an even better
time of 2.25.62.
On Sunday, the action involved Alice Haining in the U15 girls’ 1500 m where she claimed a well-deserved silver medal, while Martha Douglas and Sophie Elder qualified for their respective finals in the in the 100 and 200 m.
