Harriers Take on the Sea, Cities and Hills

May 5th, 2008

Gala Harrier’s returned for their second attempt to circum-navigate Kinghorn’s Black Rock at low tide after failing during last years race as all runners were re-directed due to a higher tide level than anticipated. They were not disappointed as 12 Harriers got their feet wet running through knee deep sea water at the half –way point in the race.

First Harrier home and improving on last year was Graeme Murdoch who finished in 17th position overall in a time of 25.44, followed by Fergus Johnstone 26th (26,15) and then the ever-improving Steve Martin 65th (28.28) was next Harrier home. Gregor McAneny (29.00) continues to get the better of Rob McCrirrick (29.25) and Tony Lunn (29.26) who finished in 76th,82nd and 83rd positions respectively. Magnus Inglis (30.46) edged out Malky Gowns (30.48) whilst first female Harrier home was Eileen Nicol in a time of 32.55 finishing in 199th. John Paterson was 237th in a time of 34.09 whilst the battles of the Sheila’s was taken by Sheila McNab who finished in 39.35 whilst Shelagh King came in 464th in a time of 41.18.

On Saturday 3rd May, the Edinburgh To North Berwick 22 mile road race was staged, where Kate Jenkins ran in as third female in a time of 2.37.09 and 33rd overall. Martin Clarke was 55th in a time of 2.44.58 out of 131 finishers. Both clocked excellent times considering they both ran the Lochaber marathon the week before.

The following day the Great Edinburgh took place with over 10000 runners hitting the streets over a tough undulating course through the historic sites of the City. Gregor McAneny clocked 40.16 which gave him 85th place overall whilst Fiona Shepherd put in another excellent run in warm conditions with a finishing time of 48.23. Dawn Grant coming back to fitness ran 53.32, whilst Anne Purves, found the heat hard going during the end of the run clocked 66.51.

Finally, Dave Nightingale hit the Hills to run the Balmoral 10K on Saturday 26th April in which he finished in 52nd place out of 1,904 runners in a time of 41.07 which also gave him the 3rd price in the Male Vet 50 category, a great result considering he had also competed in the London Marathon.

Tony has actually updated the site following my comment. My legions of fans were seriously disappointed my placing was misrepresented in the Telegraph (Border) on Tues. They are demanding a full page apology in the next issue!!
