Gala Youngster’s in UK National Selection and Lassade 10 Miler

March 3rd, 2008

On a weekend when most athletes were recovering from the tough cross country season, some very special Gala youngsters were celebrating receiving their letters of selection for two big events coming up soon.

Rowan Marr, who ran so well in the nationals last Saturday in his first season of competition has been chosen to represent the East of Scotland in the Under 13 boys London Mini Marathon, a feat never before achieved by a boy from the club. It’s a stunning achievement and he will be in the experienced company of Alice Haining, who has been selected again to represent the East in the U15 girls. In the U13 girls race, the Jones twins Hannah and Emily have also been chosen to run for North of England Schools, following their excellent results on the country throughout the season. They all take to the streets of London on Sunday 14th April and will be part of the exciting curtain raiser to the main marathon, for which Harrier Rachel Fagan has been selected to compete in the Elite ladies race.

There’s work to be done though before then, particularly for young Alice who competes in the Scottish Schools Championships in Irvine this Saturday and has also gained selection for the Inter-counties Cross Country champs in Nottingham on March 15th.

Good luck to all these young athletes.

Young Harriers Lucy Morris and Martha Douglas were running on Sunday in the Under 14 girls section at the IAPS Cross Country championships at John Muir Country Park in Dunbar. Lucy, who is also coached by Bruce Scott ran strongly to take silver, while Martha came in a very creditable 6th place.

Some slightly older athletes were in action on Sunday in Lasswade at the 10 mile road race there, one of the toughest on the circuit with 5 miles of uphill running before the second half levels out. On a bright and breezy day, first home for the Harriers was Martin Clarke who was a very creditable 39th in 65 minutes and 5 seconds, winning first place in the 50+ category by the merest whisker from the second placed runner only 4 seconds behind him. Kate Jenkins took 57th place in 67 mins and 34 secs. Also running were Carole Fortune and Dawn Grant, who took 6 minutes off her last year’s time to finish in 83 minutes, ensuring that, along with Carole and Kate Jenkins the 3 harriers took home the Senior Ladies trophy. Allan Gordon also competed and finished in a well-judged 76 minutes.

    Rosi,

well done for all the hard work you put in creating the race reports, it must be extremely difficult to compile this information on limited feedback that you receive. As I post your reports on the website I can only state that we try our best and that we do feel quilty if we miss athletes that compete in races, but we would like all concerned to let Rosi or myself know if they are running in events and want details highlighted on the website.

as someone who is not running just now due to injury the race reports are a vital link to whats going on in the club and the athletes achievements. Those responsible for collating, writing and distributing this information do tremendous work given the tight deadlines. Well done!
