Gala Harrier’s Annual Awards Ceremony 2007

November 12th, 2007

On Saturday 10th November the Club met again at the Salmon Inn for their annual Presentation Night.  Hosted by the two club captains Graeme Murdoch and Karen Renton, there were two particularly significant awards amongst the many glittering prizes on offer.  The biggest and shiniest of all – and the most historic -  entered its second century as it was presented to the winner of the Club Cross Country Champion, Graeme himself.  In 1907, the Cross Country Challenge Cup was first won by G.A Hunter, 5 years after the Harriers was founded.  100 years ago the winner had to find a security of £10.10 shillings while it was in his care but, always with a canny eye to the future, the Harriers’ Committee stated that:  “should the Club ever become defunct, the cup should be sold and proceeds handed to the Galashiels Consumptive Sanatorium!”

The newest trophy found its way into the hands of the oldest harrier present, those of veteran runner, Jack Knox of Selkirk.  Jack was made an honorary harrier for his illustrious career on the track, road and country over many decades and was presented with a piece of contemporary Selkirk Glass by President Robin Murray. This time, there was no clause as to where this should be given when the Club became defunct!!

Also of significance were the representative honours awarded to the junior members of the Club, Hannah Jones, Demi Yorke and Alice Haining, who had  brought the junior squad of the club into high prominence over the year with their excellent performances at district, national and international levels.

THE NEXT OUTING FOR THE CLUB IS TO NORHAM ON SUNDAY 18TH NOVEMBER FOR THE FIRST RACE IN THE BORDERS WINTER CROSS COUNTRY SERIES, STARTING AT 11.30 FOR JUNIORS AND 12 NOON FOR SENIORS. Photos attached: Captions
