Broxburn triumph for Gala Harriers ladies
October 24th, 2007Following their superb silver medal last week at the East District Cross Country relay championships, Gala Harriers ladies continued their winning ways with first team placing at the cross-country league race in Broxburn on Saturday. The day was kind for all the runners, with lovely autumnal sunshine and a firm course underfoot with only the infamous Lungbuster Hill to trap the over-enthusiastic.
On the two-lap, 6 km course it was the Gala ladies who once again came good, led by a fired-up Kate Jenkins who finished in a great 9th place in a time of 23:28, followed by Diane Lauder (11th in 23:36) and Katy Anderson (16th in 24:03). Despite having injured herself in Dunfermline last weekend, Rachel Fagan ran strongly to finish in 18th place in 24:20 with Gillian Duncan in 58th in 27:04.
In the 2.5 km under 13 girls race there were great runs, well-paced, from both Lucy Morris (11th in 10:46) and Laura Anderson (18th in 11:07) and it is unfortunate that one of the many other juniors couldn’t make it to the race, otherwise the team would have finished well up the standings.
Gala men didn’t match the ladies success unfortunately, although at least managing to have sufficient numbers to count in the overall points tally. More of Gala’s faster male runners will have to make an effort to support the club if they are to anyway approach the ladies’ winning ways. However, running strongly as ever were men’s captain Graham Murdoch (38th in 32:50) and Edinburgh based Fergus Johnstone (64th in 34:20). They were followed by an under-par Martin Clarke (112th in 36:24), Derek Brydon (153rd in 38:26), Alister Laurie (156th in 38:35), Robin Murray (167th in 39:24), John Patterson (186th in 40:58) and David Darroch (207th in 42:32).
