Jenkins at the double

September 11th, 2007

Just a week after her success in the Scottish Marathon Championships in Moray, Gala Harriers’ Kate Jenkins took to the roads of Glenrothes in the 50 kilometre version of the Scottish Championships.

Having just decided to compete 4 days prior to the race and with 26.2 miles of the marathon still in her legs, Jenkins made a steady start to the 14 lap run. She picked the pace until lap 10 where tiredness set in followed by nausea on the next circuit.

With encouragement from the officials Jenkins kept going and at this stage was building up a lead over Scottish internationalist Elaine Calder. However going into the last lap Kate’s lead was down to just under 400metres and she was slowing down. The determined Gala athlete managed to keep something in reserve and held on to win by 90 seconds, which is almost a photo finish in a race of 31.25 miles.

This unique double has secure Jenkins selection for the Scottish team competing over 35 miles at Draycote in February 2008.
