McBane Wins the Henderson Rose Bowl at First Attempt

September 7th, 2007

Billy McBane narrowly defeated last years champion Tommy Knox to take one of Gala Harriers annual club events on Thursday night over the double staged Henderson race.

All athletes compete over 1 mile on the Tweedbank track with a hidden handicap. The racers are then released on a 2.7 mile cross-country leg along the banks of the Tweed at handicapped intervals to hopefully finish at approximately the same time. 24 athletes took part with 20 runners all finishing within 1 minute of the winner’s time.

John Patterson who finished first on the 2.7 mile leg tied with Katy Anderson, who ran consistently over both legs to finish joint third. Tommy Knox ran quicker legs than the previous year, but was pipped by 1 place. Billy McBane took the title with a total of 5 points finishing second in the mile and third over the longer race.
