Haining Battles It Out For Title As Harriers Team Place Fourth

April 1st, 2007

The Scottish Power National Young Athletes Road Race Championships took place in Perth on Sunday March 25th, with a record entry.

The largest field was in the under-13 girls race over 2.4km, which kicked off proceedings for the day.

Only three seconds separated the first three runners as recently crowned Scottish Schools cross country champion Alice Haining (Gala Harriers) survived a late challenge to take the title in 8.24 ahead of Rachel Adamson (Central AC) in 2nd and Iona Brodie (Dundee Hawkhill Harriers) in 3rd.

Fife AC, with three athletes in the top 20, secured the team prize but the Harriers girls, led by Haining, claimed a superb 4th, the additional points scoring athletes Hannah Jones in 20th and Emily Jones in 39th, in times of 9.16 and 9.39 respectively.

Laura Anderson finished in 57th place ensuring a great day for the girls.

Sole Harriers representative in the boy’s under-13 race was Cameron Gowans, who finished in a credible 53rd place after a typical gutsy performance.
