Jenkins earns top ten finish as Central AC dominate
January 30th, 2007Gala Harrier Kate Jenkins had a great run to finish in 10th place in the scottishathletics 4km Cross Country Championships at Bellahouston Park on Sunday, where Alastair Hay and Morag MacLarty (both Central AC) took the title honours.
MacLarty, who has had a frustrating year with illness and injury, appears to be on her way back to full fitness after defeating World Duathlon Champion Catriona Morrison in an exciting finish which saw her take the lead in the final 80m of the race, to finish in 15.12, 2 seconds ahead of Morrison.
Jenkins, running as the sole Gala Harriers representative, finished in 16.25, 10 seconds clear of 11th place Hazel Dean (Central AC).
Sunday’s battles will likely re-commence when the majority of athletes will meet again in the ScottishPower National Cross Country Championships in Falkirk on Saturday February 10th.
Gala Harriers should have a number of representatives at the Nationals, and the women’s team challenge in particular, led by Kate Jenkins, is expected to be strong.
In Sunday’s men’s race, MacLarty’s clubmate Alastair Hay took the title in 12.28 ahead of second-placed Mark Pollard (inverclyde AC) in 12.32. Central’s Robert Russell took third, finishing in 12.36.
