Winter Cross Country Series goes off with a bang in Lauder

November 6th, 2006

There was a huge Gala Harriers representation at Lauder on Sunday for the first Borders winter cross-country series race of the season, while on the same day, two Harriers athletes took to Lasswade for the open cross country meeting.
In the Lauder junior race, David Bonnar was first Harrier home in a time of 12.19 over the 2-mile course, making him 7th overall and first in his age group category.

Cameron Gowans ran a great race to finish in 13.02, and 2nd in his age group, and was closely followed in by Harriet Murray, making her Harriers debut, finishing in 16th place overall and 2nd in her under-13 category, with a time of 13.08.

Craig Frater (13.56), Hannah Jones (13.57) and Martha Douglas (14.00) finished in quick succession with Hannah, another Harriers debutant, and Martha, taking 1st and 2nd places respectively in the girls’ under-11 race.

Emily Jones (14.20), also making her first appearance for the club, was 3rd girl home in the under-11 race with Gillian Sandie (15.16) and Rachel Barnett (17.28) finishing well over the challenging Lauder course.

In the 4-mile senior race the Harriers were out in force, with Graeme Murdoch first home in 8th place with a time of 28.24, followed in by Neil Aitchison in 29.28.

Ian Fairbairn ran a strong race to finish 3rd Harrier and 16th overall in 30.11 with Martin Clarke finishing first in the M50 category and 31st overall, in a time of 31.05.

Iain Bell (31.15), Kate Jenkins (31.16) and Alan Goodson (31.18) were almost inseparable as they finished in 33rd, 34th and 35th respectively, Kate finishing 2nd lady.

Magnus Inglis (31.35) and Rachel Fagan (31.55) were next over the line for Gala, closely followed by Graeme Jones (32.09) and Katy Anderson (32.28).

With Rachel and Katy finishing in 2nd and 3rd places respectively behind Kate Jenkins, the Harriers ladies have set themselves up well to compete for the honour of series ladies team champions.

David Hunter (32.44) and Malky Gowans (32.55) were next home for the Harriers, with Robin Murray (33.19) and Rob McCrirrick (33.20) following closely.

There was little between Mike Jones (33.44), Will McDermott (33.54) and Gregor McAnemy (33.55) as they all finished under the 34 minute mark, Gregor running a great race in his competitive debut for the club.

Tim Howell (34.28) and Mike Young (34.30) ran well to finish in 63rd and 65th positions overall and were followed in by Gillian Duncan (35.30), Tommy Knox (35.48), John Paterson (36.32) and Jane Chalmers (36.44).

Making up the fantastic Harriers entry were Sheila MacNab (40.40), Fiona Shepherd (40.56), Shelagh King (43.23), Karen Renton (45.00) and Anne Purves (48.21), all doing well to finish so strongly after battling for nearly 4 and a half miles through real cross-country terrain.

In Lasswade, Alice Haining finished 3rd in her age-group category in 14.11 while in the senior race, Kate Jenkins, fresh from her top-3 performance in Lauder, finished 9th lady in 28.36 over the 3.8 mile course.

Well done all at Lauder. Great results, especially for the senior women. Contrary to appearances, I haven’t died or even packed up running, but am plugging away on the hills and hope to make it out to Dunbar. Thursday nights are tricky at the moment, but hope to see you all regularly over the winter at the cross country fixtures.

    Cheers,

    Damon
