Cross Country Relays reach climax at Cumbernauld
November 2nd, 2006Cumbernauld welcomed a large field of athletes from the Scottish club scene for the Scottish Cross Country Relay Championships on Saturday.
In heavy underfoot conditions Gala Harriers ladies set a high standard for the day with Rachel Fagan, Gillian Duncan and Katy Anderson leading the three-team Harrier assault.
Rachel clocked the fastest leg of the day for the Gala ladies handing over to 2nd leg Gillian in 14th position, in a time of 17.41.
Gillian ran a strong second leg to come home in 19.11 in 19th position, to pass over to anchor leg Katy who ran a determined race to hold on to a respectable 19th place from a field over 90, in a time of 18.30.
The Harriers vets’ team of Fiona Dalgleish, Melanie Goodson and Susie Carson ran a fantastic race to finish 27th overall and 6th vets team. Consistency and tactics were key as the girls finished in impressive times of 18.43, 18.48 and 18.46, respectively.
Making up the full ladies compliment, Karen Haldane ran 20.26 over the opening leg to hand over to Anne Wild in 59th position. Anne, making her major cross country debut, ran a steady race to record 22.11, with Nicola Meikle bringing the team home in 53rd position, in 20.36.
With slightly depleted resources, only 2 Harriers men’s teams made the trip West, the first team finishing mid-field from approximately 100 teams.
Graham Murdoch, running consistently well, had another outstanding run clocking 15.33 over the first leg. Euan Jardine, not to be outdone, raced the 2nd leg in 14.49 with Euan Lindores and Alistair Wright recording 18.12 and 17.25 respectively, to bring the team home in 52nd place.
Robin Murray, on the fast-track back to fitness, ran a steady opening leg of 18.09 for the second team, to hand over to Will McDermott, who recorded 19.11 in increasingly tough conditions.
Malky Gowans, back from his U.S exploits, ran 18.30 to hand over to anchor leg Graham Murdoch, on his second outing of the day, to conclude the effort in a highly respectable time of 16.58.
