Gala Harriers fight it out on home turf and across the pond

October 24th, 2006

Gala Harriers competed in the first East Cross Country League race of the season at Livingston on Saturday, while in more exotic conditions, the Gowans family battled it out in America.

In Livingston, and facing the harsh reality of Scottish cross country, Alice Haining got the team off to the best possible start with a dominating performance in the male/female combined U13s race, leading home the 76 strong field to finish the 3km course in 10.40.

James Haining and Gillian Inglis ran steady races in the U15 4.2km event, James edging home in front of his club mate with a time of 17.30, ahead of Gillian’s 18.23.

In the senior ladies race Katy Anderson lead home the Harriers with a time of 24.33 over the 6km course. Leanne Haining and Karen Haldane, both on their way back to fitness after enforced time out from racing, were pleased with their times of 25.35 and 26.15 respectively.

Over 260 men battled out the final race of the day in heavy underfoot conditions, which was lead from start to finish by exciting young talent John Newsom from Pitreavie.

Euan Jardine was first Harrier home over the 8.4km course in a time of 28.16, followed by Fergus Johnston in 30.11 and Graham Murdoch in 30.37.

Martin Clark clocked 32.46, with Rob McCrirrick and Alistair Wright finishing in quick succession to record times of 34.27 and 34.43 respectively. Robin Murray, on his return from injury, ran 35.55, with Will McDermott making up the full compliment of Harriers in 37.08.

Out in Florida, USA, the Gowans family successfully flew the flag for the Harriers and Scotland. Cameron Gowans finished 1st in the 60 strong field of under 12s in the Disneyland race, with younger brother Fraser and sister Rhona both finishing in the top 15. In the senior 10k event, Dad Malky Gowans came 3rd in his age group category and 22nd overall from a large field of over 2,000 runners.
