Gala Harriers ring the changes at club AGM

October 10th, 2006

There was an excellent turnout of harriers at the clubs AGM on Tuesday night, where club president Karen Renton welcomed everyone to the meeting and congratulated the club on another very successful season, one which the club has continued to grow in numbers and ambition.

Karen introduced the clubs new three year development plan, which it is hoped will see Gala Harriers at the forefront of athletics in the Borders and Scotland. Ladies captain Katy Anderson praised the efforts of the Gala Harriers ladies section, winning silver at the East District XC Relays, with special mentions for Alice Haining, (National XC Champion), Kate Jenkins, (Moray Marathon champion and winner of the West Highland Way ultra race) and Rachel Fagan, (Eildon 2 Hills and Black Hill Race winner).

Men’s captain Robin Murray also praised the efforts of the men’s section, winning the Winter XC Series, as well as recognising Euan Jardine’s continued international successes in hill running and the progress made by Fergus Johnston and Graeme Murdoch this season. Robin also paid tribute to the continued successes of super vet Jack Knox, wheelchair athlete John Hunter and Davy Darroch in his numerous learning disability championships.

There were a few changes in the harriers committee, with Karen Renton standing down as club president and Tina Hulton and Lynne Knox also leaving the committee. Robin Murray was elected as the new president, so stood down as men’s captain and press secretary, with Graeme Murdoch taking over as men’s captain. Lynsey Renton took on the new role of junior team manager, with Will and Caroline McDermott also joining the committee.

Gala Harriers will be taking 3 junior and 6 senior teams to the East District XC Relays in Dunfermline on Saturday 14th Oct. This is the start of a very busy cross country season, which has races every weekend till Christmas, including the Winter XC Series, National and East District XC Relays and league races. Gala will host the East District XC Championships in December and still has to make room for its own club races.
