Harriers make a splash at Thirlestane
September 25th, 2006Gala Harriers had a good turn out of runners in both the junior and senior events at the Thirlestane Castle Run on Sunday. The weather did not put off the junior and ‘Jog Scotland’ participants in the first race, which was won with a very commanding performance by Laura Goodson in a time of 9.52. Gillian Inglis was a very creditable 10th, with Mark and Kerry Bonnar and Liam Howell also putting in strong performances.
At the start of the senior race the heavens opened, turning the cross-country section of the race into a very muddy and slippery course, much to the disappointment of all those who turned up in nice white running shoes.
John Borthwick recovered from a nasty fall at the start of the cross-country run to work his way through the field to finish a respectable 3rd in a time of 30.37. Iain Arnott also fell on the run in to the finish but picked himself up to hold onto 5th place ahead of the fast improving Alan Goodson, who finished 12th.
Rachel Fagan ran an excellent race to pick up the ladies title she last won two years ago, finishing an excellent 16th overall in a time of 32.51. Ex Harrier Ross Hope held off super vet Jack Knox as they finished 18th and 19th respectively, while Graeme Jones looked in good form and ran well to finish 25th, ahead of Malky Gowans who came in a respectable 28th.
Graham Capper was surprisingly competing in this event for the first time and was well placed when he also slipped on the muddy course and twisted his ankle and had to limp back to the start Melanie Goodson finished strongly in 34th spot and 6th lady just as the weather turned even worse if that was possible.
Tim Howell was next home in 40th place, followed by Eileen Nicol 44th and Laura Howie 46th, Susan Howell 68th, Angie Laurie 74th, Shelagh King 78th and finally Anne Purves in 80th place.
Congratulations to two multi talented Gala Harrier juniors, who were competing in the Scottish Junior Triathlon Championships held at the Gala swimming pool on Saturday. Alice Haining picked up the Scottish U13 Triathlon title and Dylan Fagan claimed the boys U8’s title.
Gala Harriers AGM will be held on Tuesday 3rd of October in the upstairs room of the Salmon Inn. The meeting will start at 8.00 pm and all members are encouraged to attend. Election nominations for committee positions are posted on the notice board in the Queens Centre.
Next race for the harriers will be the Norham 10K on Sunday 8th of October.
