New course record set by Border Running Clubs all at sea!
September 20th, 2006Bitter adversaries, but close friends Gala Harriers and Lauderdale Limpers
Running Clubs buried their usual rivalry to crew one of the famous ultra-
fast Dragon Boats in a one day regatta of racing, of a kind much more akin
to the China Sea than the usual land-based running events which these
clubs contest.
In the spectacular surroundings of the Firth of Forth,
under the shadow of the Forth Rail Bridge, the sixteen Borders runners
responded to the drums of their cox to power these ultra slick racing
boats under the power of muscle and determination alone, dominating the
other eight teams supporting the event and in doing so raising money for
Chest Heart and Stroke, Scotland, the medical charity who organised the
day.
The clubs’ finely tuned athletes not only drew admiring glances from
the event organisers, and watching crowds, but also went to the top of the
leader board in the early stages, recording the fastest time of the day
(54.48 sec), and winning all three opening rounds and semi final
comfortably.
However in the grand final, inexperience showed with the
Borders crew coming in a valiant 3rd place, with the margin between first
and third being less than 1 second.
With such an event the Charity is the winner, with the Borders crew
contributing almost £1,500 to a total of £12,000 raised in what was the
first of what will hopefully become an annual event to be held in the
capital.
Team Captain and Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland Regional
Manager Rosi Capper was delighted both with the amount raised for the
charity and the fantastic team spirit of both clubs and said that it
should become an annual event in the Clubs’ calendars.
