Knox pastes the opposition
September 20th, 2006Gala Harriers held their last club race of the season on Thursday night, with 26 runners competing for the Henderson rose-bowl trophy. The race consists of a closed handicap one-mile track race, followed by a three-mile open handicap cross-country run.
Graeme Murdoch is obviously not taking his new married life seriously, cos he had far too much energy to spare as he raced away from John Borthwick over the last 100 metres of the mile run to record a respectable time of 4.59, with John recording 5.04 and Martin Clarke next over the line in 5.14.
Fastest ladies were Katy Anderson (5.46), Rachel Fagan (5.49) and Gillian Duncan (6.00).
The cross-country race started from Lowood to Gattonside, across the chain bridge and back along the Melrose riverside walk to the finish at the Waverly Castle Hotel. Alan Goodson produced an excellent run to win by a clear 50 metres in a scratch time of 18.53, with Tommy Knox running strongly to claim second spot, just holding off the fast finishing Graeme Murdoch.
Rachel Fagan was first lady to finish in 6th spot, followed closely by Susan Howell in 10th place.
When the results from both races were calculated it was Selkirk painter and decorator Tommy Knox who celebrated his first harriers trophy, with Graeme Murdoch second and Graeme Jones and Alastair Wright sharing third place.
Many thanks to Tony Lunn for organising the race and to Caroline McDermott, Struan King and Neil Aitchison for time keeping and recording results.
