Hawick 10K produces best times for Gala

August 31st, 2006

There was a good turnout of 14 Gala Harriers supporting Teviotdale Harriers at the Hawick 10K on Sunday. Steve Cairns, running for Hunters Bog Trotters, has dominated the borders 10K series this year but he was pushed all the way by fellow ‘boggy’, Don Naylor in a race which came down to a sprint finish over the last 50 metres, with Steve just hanging on to win in a time of 31.20.

Euan Jardine used the race as a wee bit of speed training, before he heads off to Turkey next week to compete for Scotland in the World Hill Running Championships. Euan ran a steady race to finish a creditable 4th in a time of 34.48, with John Borthwick finishing 6th in a time of 35.54.

Graeme Murdoch produced a personal best performance of 37.07 to claim 10th place and was followed over the line by Neil Aitchison and Martin Clarke, who finished in 38.24 and 38.26 respectively. Kate Jenkins set off at a cracking pace and sped round the first lap of the course, unfortunately Kate didn’t realise it was a two lap race and suffered over the closing stages of the second lap but still won the ladies race in a respectable  time of 38.52.

Rachel Fagan and Katy Anderson both produced PB’s, finishing 2nd and 3rd ladies in times of 40.28 and 40.44 respectively. Dianne Lauder was next harrier over the line in 41.50, with Malky Gowans (42.30) and Graeme Jones (43.10), producing respectable times. Tommy Knox did just enough to keep in front of Gillian Duncan, finishing in 45.46 to Gillians 45.55. Completing the harriers turnout was Dawn Grant who produced the fourth PB performance of the day as she clocked an excellent 48.30.
The junior fun run was a Gowans affair, with Cameron producing a spirited sprint finish to snatch 3rd place. Cameron’s brother and sister, Fraser and Rhona both completed the 2 mile course and had the satisfaction of beating their mum Fiona, although she had run 12 miles earlier in the day.
