Methven cruises to 5Km track title

May 1st, 2006

Gala Harriers held their first race night of the season on Thursday with the juniors competing in 100 metre sprints and the seniors running the 5000 metres. There were some very good junior races, with all the athletes showing great determination and effort and a good turn of speed.

The P4/5 Boys race was won by Ewan Duncan, with John Berry a close 2nd and Ryan Shaw 3rd. In the P4/5 Girls race Hannah Hunter was 1st with Kerry Sunderlands 2nd and Polly Simpson 3rd.

Struan White was 1st in the P6/7 Boys sprint, with Cameron Gowans 2nd and Keith Young 3rd. Alice Haining and Demi Schoffield ran the closest race of the evening in the girls P6/7 event as they crossed the line together, with Mirtha Douglas 3rd.

Emily Douglas dominated the Girls S1/2 race, winning comfortably in 13.40, with Ashley Hedderly 2nd and Hannah Gallacher 3rd. Keiron Crews came out on top of the S1/2 Boys race, with Paul Ferguson 2nd and Alistair Rutter 3rd.

Sandy Walker just got the better of Iain Frater in the U17 boys race, Sandy clocking 12.13 with Iain close behind in 12.52. Rory Methven obviously wanted to catch the end of Eastenders, such was the pace he set off at the start of the senior 5K race. Rory was chased all the way by Graeme Murdoch and despite slowing over the last couple of laps, Rory ran out the winner in a time of 17.23, with Graeme closing fast behind in a time of 17.35.

Jack Knox was using the track race to get some race training in before he defends the Scottish veteran’s track titles he won last year and he still showed he’s got the better of many half his age by coming in 3rd ahead of Ewan Lindores and Martin Clarke.

Rachel Fagan was the first lady to finish in a time of 20.25, with Angela Foss and Leanne Haining, finishing 2nd and 3rd.

Next race for the harriers is the clubs Intersport 10K handicap race on Monday  8th of May. The race starts at 6.30 from Gala Academy and it is hoped that there will be a better turnout of harriers than recent club races.
