Harriers Cover the Country
April 23rd, 2006The London marathon has traditionally attracted a large number of Gala Harriers to take on the demanding 26.2 mile race around the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Warf, Buckingham Palace and the Mall but injuries have taken a heavy toll this year, with only Margot Crosbie and Eileen Nicol making it to the start line.
Both ladies have trained very hard, with Eileen running a respectable 3 hours 39 minutes and Margot, (running her first marathon), close behind in 3 hours 40 minutes. After her win at the Scottish XC Championships, Alice Haining was invited to run in the London Mini Marathon. Running in a huge field of junior athletes from all over Britain, Alice ran a fantastic race to finish 5th overall in a time of 15.55 over the 4km course.
There was a small contingent of harriers at Grangemouth on Sunday to run the 40th Round the Houses 10K road race. Graeme Murdoch ran a personal best time of 37.20, while Robin Murray won the Selkirk ‘follical challenge’, recording a modest 40.39, to Al Lauries 41.19.
Euan Jardine ran another impressive race on Saturday, winning the 5 mile Girvan Hill Race in a time of 29.30, to make it three in a row this season so far. As a result of his efforts Euan has again been selected to run for Scotland in the Home Nations Hill Championships at Knockdhu in Northern Ireland. Euan will be accompanied on his trip by Kate Jenkins who has also been selected along with former harrier and British Hill Champion Jill Mykura.
Cameron Gowans represented Gala primary schools at the Scottish Primary School’s XC Championships at Kirkaldy on Saturday. Despite a poor starting position, Cammy did well to work his way through the 200 strong field to finish 89th overall.
Next races for the harriers is the clubs 5K track race for seniors on Thursday and the 400 and 800 metre races for the juniors.
