Gala Harriers take the team titles at Norham
March 20th, 2006Gala Harriers finished off the cross-country season with a bag full of trophies after the final race of the Borders Winter XC Series at Norham on Sunday. With strong displays by junior and senior runners over the seven race series, the harriers were able to claim both the team championship titles and several individual titles, with one of their best set of results of the series.Alice Haining finished 2nd overall in the junior race, to take the 12/13 girls title, with Claire White picking up the 3rd prize in the same category. Laura Goodson has dominated the 14/15 girls category all series and claimed the champions trophy, as did Murray Lemmon in the 11/12 boys event.
Murray had another strong race finishing 6th overall ahead of Dylan Howel (9th), who took the 3rd place prize over the series and Cammy Gowans who finished 15th on the day and 4th in their category. Cameron Fair had his best finish of the series, taking 3rd spot overall but he had to be content with the 2nd place trophy in the 12/13 boys category, with James Haining finishing 7th on the day claiming the 3rd prize. Iain Frater (12th), has put in a good series of races over the winter but was just out of the prizes, finishing 4th in the boys 14/15 category.
Gala Harriers had claims in both the overall senior titles, with Damon Rodwell winning the senior race on the day and lifting the trophy for the 1st overall male in the series. Kate Jenkins was 15th on the day and claimed the overall ladies title, although she was running in the vest of her first claim club Carnethy, we still like to think of this as a Gala success as well!
Ewan Lindores finished off a fine race season by finishing 20th overall on the day and lifting the trophy for first junior male runner in the series. Iain Bell took the third prize in the men’s veterans’ category after finishing 12th on the day, while newly turned super vet Graham Capper lifted second prize in his category after finishing 31st in the race. Karen Haldane claimed the third prize in the ladies veteran’s category, while Leanne Haining lifted the ladies 40+ veterans title for the second year in a row.
In the more mature veteran’s categories there were 3rd prizes for Shelagh King and Allan Gordon and yet another title for Jack Knox in the men’s super super superior veteran’s category. Other harriers who contributed to the clubs success over the series and who picked up horse brass mementos for competing in at least four races, were; Graeme Murdoch (11th), Robin Murray (21st), Alastair Laurie (23rd), Martin Clarke (24th), Malky Gowans (33rd), Will McDermott (42nd), Tim Howel (47th), Melanie Goodson (49th), Caroline McDermott (77th) and finally Susan Howel (81st).

Like to add my congratulations to all the successful athletes at all the cross country events over the Winter. Gala Harriers athletes have been prominent in events all over the country. On behalf of the coaches at the club, well done to every athlete (young and older) who has come along to training throughout the Winter, completed some pretty demanding sessions and represented Gala Harriers. Thanks also to the people who have assisted in getting our young athletes to races in some far flung places. Summer sees new challenges for everyone and an opportunity to continue the improvement.
