Wooler proves a tough start to the Winter XC Series

November 20th, 2005

The Borders Winter XC series got off to a good start on Sunday, over a tough and demanding route around the Wooler golf course. There were 13 Gala Harriers making the trip over the border and it was up to Graeme Murdoch to lead the way finishing as first harrier home in a respectable 13th place in a time of 31.49, with Iain Bell close behind in 18th place.

Rory Methven found the step up in distance and the hilly course a shock to the system but he finished well in 20th spot to keep in front of the Selkirk trio of Martin Clarke (21st), Alastair Laurie (23rd) and Jack Knox (25th).

Jim Langsdale ran well (29th), to lead home the rest of the harriers in the field, with Malky Gowans (42nd), Will McDermott (43rd) and Paul Morris (44th) all packing in well at the finish.

Karen Haldane was the only lady running for the harriers, finishing 50th overall from the 90 starters and third in her age category in a time of 38.01.

Laura Goodson was making a welcome return to Gala colours and ran a typically storming race, finishing 1st girl and 5th overall. Keeping up the family tradition of late starts was young Cameron Gowans, as he crossed the start line a good minute after everyone else had left it. Despite his time handicap Cammy put up a good show to finish 14th from the 25 strong junior field.
