Harriers Start Winter Season With a Bang
October 17th, 2005Following on from last weeks early season success in the East District cross-country relay championships, Gala Harriers good from continued into the league season at Stirling University on Saturday. Leading from the front and coasting to a victory was Alice Haining in the under-13 girls category. Alice showed a clean pair of heels to all the others and finished well clear in 9 minutes and 34 seconds.
Also running superbly and finishing second in the under-15 girls category was Gillian Inglis in a time of 16 minutes and 57 seconds. With both these young runners in such great form at the moment the Harriers could be looking for great results over the rest of the season, particularly at the National Relay Championships in Cumbernauld next weekend.
A very brave decision was made by the mensí Club Captain Robin Murray to rest Scottish Hill Running representative Euan Jardine, after his recent run in New Zealand, in order to prepare for the Championships next weekend.
With Robin undergoing warm-weather training in Spain it was left to Fergus Johnston to bring home the remaining Harriers in the senior mensí race.
The Stirling University course is one of the most scenic of the cross-country venues and the warm afternoon and gently undulating terrain resulted in good fast times for the nine senior men who came well up in the field of 216 runners.
Times and placing were as follows: Fergus Johnston (50th, 32:00), Ron Logan (57th 32:25), Graeme Murdoch (90th 34:01), Rory Methven (103rd 34:27), Steve Gillan (122nd 35:26), Euan Lindores (117th 35:05), Graeme Pogson (140th 36:17), Tommy Knox (145th 36:31), Davie Darroch (148th 36:46).
There are great hopes for the ladies team next weekend after their bronze medal performance in Edinburgh. Diane Lauder again performed superbly and finished 11th in the field of 93 runners. She was followed by Leanne Haining (37th 21:49) and ladiesí Club Captain Katy Anderson ( 47th 22:48).
With this sort of form and a little bit of luck then there are great expectations for good results for the Harriers in Cumbernauld.
