It’s Been a Marathon Task For Gala Harriers again
April 24th, 2005It was a smaller than normal group of harriers who made the trip down to London last week, to take part in the London Marathon. Top harrier again was Tony Lunn who ran a very impressive time of 2.50.40, knocking 3 minutes off his previous marathon best time. Martin Clarke has been trying for the last five years to dip under the illusive three hour mark for a marathon but he will have to try again next year. Martin ran 3.05.51 with a slow start costing him those precious minutes in the first half of the race.
Martin should have learnt from local policeman Steve Cairns, (running for Hunters Bog Trotters), he was right at the front on the start line rubbing shoulders with world record holder Paul Tergat.
Derek Fraser has run a good few sub three hour marathons but had to be content with 3.13.32 this year. Derek was well on course for a good time running 1.27.35 at half way but the heat and the dreaded ‘wall’ kicked in with five miles to go. David Nightingale must be very pleased with his time of 3.23.13, especially as he only decided to run in the race six weeks before. Dave followed a six week marathon preparation program he saw in a running magazine and it obviously paid off. (Not recommended for first time marathon runners!!!).
Dave Hunter running his first ever marathon, recorded a very respectable time of 3.41.25. Dave enjoyed every minute of the race, especially the crowds going over Tower Bridge.
The only girl running this year was 18 year old Natasha Moir. Natasha has trained hard all through the winter and got round the course in 5.12.06, with a few sensible walking breaks every now and again.
Alice Haining ran in the Mini London Marathon and finished 12th overall and 2nd Scottish girl. Alice was boxed in at the start and found it difficult to get running but she finished strongly, overtaking many of the 300 odd runners in the final straight down the Mall.
