Harriers Toil In the Sun at Lochaber
April 24th, 2005Fort William is one of the wettest places in Britain and many Lochaber Marathons have felt the full brunt of a west coast downpour in the past. Not so on Sunday when the sun shone and the temperatures climbed for three Gala Harrier ladies running in probably the most scenic marathon around. Kate Jenkins is a past champion at Lochaber and she was hoping to add the Scottish title to go with the Lochaber Trail Race 10K she won on Saturday. Kate could not quite make it a double but her third place in the ladies race in a time of 3.17 was still a great effort.
The strengthening wind and the sun on the return along Loch Eil took its toll on Eileen Nicol but she battled on bravely to record 3.47, slower than she was hoping for but still a good time.
Lucy Alkin-Young was running her first marathon and was on course for a good result until the last two miles. Lucy had to dig deep physically and mentally to finish the race and it is much to her credit that she got over the finish line in a time of 4.45.
