Norham Cross Country Proves a Tough Test
January 30th, 2005Round 5 of the Eastern Borders Winter XC Series was held in glorious sunshine at Norham on Sunday, with yet another healthy turnout in both senior and junior races. Norham has the deserved reputation of being one of the toughest races in the series with hills, burns and woodland paths, to test the best of them, not to mention the famous rope climb.
Gala Harriers had a smaller squad than usual but were well led by Jack Knox who showed that he’s getting back into a bit of form, finishing 14th on the day and 1st in his vet’s category.
Alastair Laurie put the disappointment of his last series race behind him with a fine 19th place finish and he was followed home by the ever improving Jim Langsdale who overtook Graham Capper on the final run in to claim 22nd spot, Graham finishing 23rd.
Leanne Haining all but wrapped up the ladies veteran’s title, with a fine run to claim 25th place overall, 2nd lady and first supervet.
Malky Gowans starting on time and at the same race as everyone else, produced a good performance to finish 28th. Davy Darroch did not have his best day and was disappointed with his !
37th place finish, while Alan Gordon was all smiles finishing 43rd overall and second in his veteran’s category.
There were 40 juniors at the start of their race, which was once again dominated by Athletics Club Eyemouth.
Cammy Fair was first harrier home in 14.25 to claim a very good 7th place, while in the absence of Alice Haining it was left up to brother James to put in a great run to take 10th spot in a time of 15.19.
Last but not least was Cameron Gowans who ran a gutsy race to finish 38th and make up the third counter in the team competition, where the juniors finished 4th this time.
