Gala Harriers Running all Over the World

January 1st, 2005

Catch up with the news about Euan Jardine in New Zealand, Allan and Claire Gordon in Warsaw as well as Dianne Lauder and Gillian Duncan in Northern Ireland. Euan Jardine travelled to New Zealand to compete in the World Hill Running Championships held in Wellington at the weekend. Euan was running for Scotland in the men's team over a tough 3 lap 13km course in the hills overlooking the New Zealand capital.

Euan was running well up to the third lap, when he suffered an asthma attack. Much to his credit he continued running, when many would have dropped out, and finished the race in 80th place from an elite field of over 200 runners.

Jill Mykura a former harrier and now running for Carnethy, was also running in the ladies race where she finished behind team mates and former World Champion Angela Mudge and Tracy Brindlay.

More harriers travelling the world to run were father and daughter Allan and Claire Gordon, as they took part in the Warsaw Marathon in Poland. Allan described the conditions as perfect, which means that it was probably cloudy with a wind at his back. Claire ran a superb race to finish as 4th senior female in an impressive time of 3.08.07, with Allan also recording an excellent time of 3.33.48.

Not travelling quite as far, only over the Irish Sea, were Gillian Duncan and Dianne Lauder as they competed for the Lothian and Borders Police team in the British Police 10 mile road championships. Dianne followed on from her impressive time at the Great Scottish Run the previous week to finish third in a time of 65 minutes, with Gillian also recording a very respectable time of 71 minutes to help the ladies team take the silver medal.

Apologies to Gillian for reporting that she ran in the Great Scottish Run 10K last week, she did in fact run in the half marathon and recorded a good time of 1.43.07.

This Thursday will be the last track session for the juniors at Tweedbank. There has been a great turnout all summer and many thanks should go to Lynne Knox, the coaches and helpers for organising such a successful season.

There will be a presentation of SHINE awards and all juniors are reminded to bring their jars of coppers for the 'Lap the Track'.

With dark nights approaching, coach Neil Renton would like to remind all members that fluorescent bibs or jackets must be worn on training nights from now on.

Next races for the harriers will be the Norham 10K on Sunday, which is also the final race in the Borders 10K Championship.
