Penicuik, Langholm and Glasgow Draw the Harriers

January 1st, 2005

ound up of performances by Harriers involved in races over the weekend. Four Gala Harriers made the trip to Penicuik to run in their 10K road race on Saturday. Bryan Bailey was fastest on the day, staggering up the north face of the ‘Auchendinny Eiger’ on his way to a respectable time of 38.49.

Trying to dip under the 40 minute mark were John Cairns and Graeme Murdoch, unfortunately Penicuik is not renowned as a PB course and both had to be content with times of 40.11 and 40.34 respectively. Karen Renton was the only lady harrier running on the day and she was pleased with her time of 48.15.

The Britanic Assent Women’s 10K in Glasgow attracted the biggest ever all female race entry on Sunday, with nearly 13,000 ladies lining up at the start. Katy Anderson ran a storming race to finish 59th overall in a time of 41.53. Katy was followed by Gillian Duncan who also ran a very respectable time of 44.40, with Pauline Ballantyne completing the harriers contingent in a time of 50.46.

The Muckletoon Doctors Run is held in Langholm every year and it attracted a field of 82 runners on Sunday. Joining them on the day was local lad John Borthwick and men’s captain Robin Murray. After the customary start of Thry, Twy, Yin, Go, the field set off on a challenging and somewhat hilly all terrain course.

John Borthwick has never won this race but he’s been 2nd three times in the past and he made that four times on Sunday with a fine, if not frustrating run of 46.37 over the 8 mile course. Robin Murray followed and was very relieved to be finished in 20th place in a time of 53.14.
