Gala Day at Hawick
January 1st, 2005Hawick Summer Festival had far from summer weather on Sunday, when nearly 140 runners lined up at the start of the Teviotdale Harriers 10K road race. There were16 Gala Harriers braving the wind and rain at the start, with Tony Lunn leading the way from the gun, finishing first harrier home in a time of 37.52.
Next harrier over the line was Dianne Lauder who ran an excellent time of 38.27 to take the ladies prize and put herself in a very strong position in the Borders 10K Series.
George Runciman, John Cairns and Robin Murray tracked each other all the way round the two lap course, with George, (running in a Lauderdale Limpers vest), clocking 39.35 and just holding off the sprint finish of John and Robin who both finished in 39.36.
Graeme Jones set off at a cracking pace and must have had the race winner Steve Cairns worried for the first 50 metres or so, unfortunately Jonesy tired after his early exertions to finish in a time of 41.14, almost 10 minutes behind Cairns.
Ewan Lindores running in his first 10K race recorded a very respectable time of 41.41, with a disappointed Gary Wright just behind in 41.44. Graeme Sutherland was another who must have packed the wrong vest on the day, he recorded 42.56 in his Lauderdale top, with Gillian Duncan setting a personal best time of 43.08 close behind.
Jane Chalmers and Pauline Ballantyne are improving by the week and both must be encouraged by their times of 45.30 and 48.48 respectively.
Gillian McCrirrick and Angela Lawrie both found the cooler conditions more to their liking than earlier in the season at the Gala 10K. Gillian and Angela finished with respectable times of 52.02 and 53.43.
Julie Anderson was delighted with her time of 57.09 and will be looking forward to running faster still over the rest of the season. Lisa Daly, taking part in her first 10K event, ran a well paced race to finish in 61.09 and complete the turnout for the harriers.
