Great Scottish Run is Too Hot To Handle

January 1st, 2005

On a day when temperatures soared into the 80's, twelve Gala Harriers joined in with the record field of 19,000 runners to run in the Great Scottish Run 10K and Half Marathon races. The sensible ones ran the 10K, which started an hour before the half marathon, before it got really hot.

Davy Darroch was first harrier over the finish line in 40.46, with Rory Methven suffering from going off too fast at the start, finishing in a disappointing 41.46.

Fiona Dalgleish ran another strong race to finish 12th lady overall in a time of 42.47, with training partner Gillian Duncan not too far behind in 45.23.

Running the race for the first time was Louise Johnston, she can be pleased with her time of 57.34 but Anne Purves will probably be a wee bit disappointed with her time of 65.12.

Tony Lunn didn't let the crowds or the conditions affect him, recording a very respectable time of 1.23.19 to finish first harrier in the half marathon race.

Dianne Lauder was also out for a fast time and had she not been forced to stop for an unscheduled 'comfort break', she would surely have gone well under 90 minutes.

As it was modesty prevented her from copying Paula Radcliffe and she had to be content with an official recording of 1.31.27, although her own timing was closer to 1.28.

Martin Clarke, recovering from injury, took things a bit easier than normal and recorded his slowest time for many years, clocking 1.32.50, while Allan Gordon ran very strongly to record 1.40.49.

Pauline Ballantyne completed the harriers turnout, finishing in a respectable 1.53.53 in the hottest part of the day.
