Jardine Claims His First Eildon Hill Victory
January 1st, 2005Saturday saw the running of the Eildon Two Hills race in Melrose. The weather was perfect for spectators and marshals, with bright warm sunshine and little or no wind. However the 42 runners found it a bit tougher and would have quite liked a bit of rain to cool them down as they made their way through the town and up onto the Eildons. Euan Jardine dominated the race from the start and was never led as he won convincingly in a time of 29.02 to take the title for the first time but probably not the last.
Euan's win was the first for a Gala Harrier in eight years and was more than 4 minutes ahead of his nearest rival Syd Coxon of Tynedale who was 2nd in 33.12 and also claimed the veteran's cup.
Fergus Johnston fairly flew down from the top of the second Eildon hill to finish a very respectable 3rd in a time of 33.29. Completing the Gala Harriers winning team was Neil Aitchison who was 5th in a time of 34.22.
Other harriers running in the race were, John Cairns 7th, Martin Clarke 8th , Robin Murray 13th, Graeme Pogson 14th, Graeme Jones 18th and Shelagh King who claimed the female supervet prize.
Thanks to Ron Logan for organising the race and to Loch Carron of Scotland for sponsoring the race again and also to Melrose Rugby club for the use of their facilities.
