Gala Harriers Join In With a Braw Day at the Sports

January 1st, 2005

Gala Harriers hosted their 10 km road race and fun run on Sunday, as part of the Braw Lads Sports on Sunday. Despite high temperatures there was a good field of runners at the start of the race, with over 130 lining up ready for the gun to go. Nick Altman of Hunters Bog Trotters produced an excellent performance to win the Detroit Cup, which incidentally was presented 75 years ago at the first ever Braw Lads Sports for a 6 mile road race.

Nick’s time was a new course record as he cruised home to comfortably win in a time of 31.19, with Shettleston Harriers Marcus Scotney claiming 2nd place in 32.52 and Dave Wright of HBT taking 3rd place in 32.56.

First male veteran was Gerard Scullion from Portobello in a time of 36.00, which was just in front of Ron Logan who finished first harrier home in a time of 36.08 and take 7th place.

First lady over the line was Ros Alexander from Carnegie Harriers, who was 9th overall and also smashed the ladies course record in the process to record a time of 36.24. Local Peebles lass Sue Ridley, running for Edinburgh Southern Harriers had to be content with 2nd place despite also going inside the old course record, finishing in a time of 36.47.

Dianne Lauder claimed 3rd place for Gala Harriers with a fine run and time of 38.26. Other harrier runners were Tony Lunn (17th) in 37.53, David Nightingale (18th) celebrated his recent 50th birthday by taking the first SuperVet prize and also claiming a personal best time of 38.02.

Graeme Murdoch was 21st in 38.31, while Martin Clarke (24th), showing few signs of tiredness from the Eildons race recorded 38.53. Tish Affleck took the ladies SuperVet prize in a time of 40.58, with Graham Capper close behind in 37th place in a time of 41.06.

John Cairns did still feel the after effects from running up the Eildons the day before and jogged round in 41.42, with Leanne Haining lifting the 2nd female veterans prize, finishing 45th overall in a time of 42.24.

Andrea Pogson was delighted to take the 3rd vets prize in her time of 42.35, with Graeme Jones close behind her in 49th place in a time of 43.00. Graeme Sutherland dusted down his Gala Harriers vest for the race and was inspired to run a respectable time of 43.33 and take 50th place.

Eileen Nicol ran another strong steady race to record 44.06, with Will McDermott, Alan Gordon and Gillian Duncan all following each other over the line in 44.32, 44.44 and 45.12 respectively.

Completing a strong turnout from the harriers were, John Patterson (48.44), Karen Renton (49.31), Lucy Alkin-Young (50.26), Caroline Mcdermott (55.33) and Anne Lawrie (58.57).

There was a disappointing turn out of 35 runners for the 2km Fun Run and it would seem that the timing of the race coincided with some of the school races.

Despite the low turnout Alice Haining still made light work of everyone in the field to win in a time of 7.41. Second girl was Lauren Corbett from Teviotdale Harriers and third was Lucy Logan.

First boy was Danny Martin, in a time of 8.13, with Ross Corbett 2nd and Iain Frater 3rd.

Gala Harriers and the Braw Lads and Lasses reintroduced the Primary School Cup for the top three finishers from a local school and this year it was won by Balmoral Primary School with the help from Cameron Gowans, Duncan Millar and Amy Johnstone.

Many thanks to Tommy Knox for sponsoring the fun run prizes and also to the Braw Lads Sports committee, Andy Wallwork and his team of massage therapists and of course to all the marshals and race officials on the day.
