For Some Harriers One Race in the Weekend is not Enough
December 5th, 2004There were a few Ladhope survivors lining up at the start of the second Winter XC Series Race at Duns on Sunday. Obviously not feeling any lasting after effects was John Borthwick, who ran a very intelligent race, tracking the lead two City of Edinburgh runners for much of the 4 mile race, before sprinting ahead in the last half mile to comfortably win his first series race in a time of 24.30.
Struan King overcame a recurring knee injury to record 26.22 and finish 10th overall, with Malky Gowans putting in a fine sprint finish to claim 29th place and make up the third counting team member in a time of 29.28. Malky’s sprint took him away from Davy Darroch who ran well despite his race the day before to finish 31st in 29.33.
Rachel Fagan finished 5th lady in a time of 29.41, with Leanne Haining close behind as 1st female supervet and 6th lady overall in a time of 30.23. Following the two ladies was Jim Langsdale who ran a well paced race to finish 41st in a time of 30.44, with another Ladhope survivor John Paterson completing the Gala runners in 51st place in a time of 32.52.
The junior race was well attended by young harriers and they grouped well together at the finish, with Selkirk runners Euan Lindores and Cameron Fair racing it out with Alice Haining to cross the finish line in 8th, 9th and 10th places respectively.
Danny Martin also put in a strong finish, to finish 24th and he was followed by Cameron Gowans 31st, Darren Knox 37th , James Haining 42nd and Claire White 45th.
Thanks to the efforts of Euan, Cameron and Alice the junior harriers took the second team place behind a very strong ACE team from Eyemouth.
Many thanks to Mr Hay for letting the winter cross country series use the grounds and estates of Duns Castle and to Graham Capper and team for organising the race.
