Alice gets the Harriers off to a Flying Start

November 28th, 2004

Alice Haining must have the Scottish Athletics coaches and selectors licking their lips in anticipation, such is her dominance of the U11 cross-country age group she runs in. Alice won her race at the second East District League meeting at Kirkaldy by a clear fifty metres or more on Sunday, leaving both boys and girls trailing in her wake and recording an excellent time of 7.04 over the mile long course.

Also producing a fine run was Laura Goodson, running in the U13 girls race, she finished 5th from the field of 48 runners in a time of 10.11. Daniel Martin is just getting his cross-country legs and he was pleased with his performance in the U13 boys race, finishing 33rd from the field of 74 in a time of 10.59.

Gillian Inglis ran well to finish 23rd in the U15 girls race in a time of 20.27, she is steadily improving and will be looking to pick up a few places by the time of the next league meeting in the new year.

The ladies league has really taken off in the past few years with the number and quality of runners getting bigger and better each race. Sally Barr led the ladies team home over their 4 mile course in a time of 30.56 to finish 15th and just keep ahead of Leanne Haining who was closing fast, finishing 19th in a time of 31.06.

Nicola Meikle may have dropped a couple of places on her last race, finishing 33rd this time but she continues to look stronger with every race she runs in.

Euan Jardine was the clear star for the Gala men with a top ten finish in a time of 34.36. This was the highest placed finish for a harrier in many years and we hope he can repeat the effort at the District Championships in two weeks time.

John Borthwick came down to earth with a bump after his great run at last weeks Brampton to Carlisle race. John found the clatchy conditions a bit tough and was disappointed to finish 53rd in a time of 38.14. Struan King overtook John on the first of the long climbs into the Fife countryside but couldn’t hold him off, eventually finishing a respectable 77th in a time of 39.30.

Robin Murray got a bit of revenge on fellow team-mate Martin Clarke, after trailing in behind him over the last few months. Robin put in a strong burst at the top of the final decent to open up a good gap between himself and Martin, which saw him finish 107th in a time of 40.49, with Martin finishing 119th in 41.17.

Alan Goodson ran a fine race in his first outing for the harriers, clocking a respectable time of 42.59 over the 9km course to finish 147th, with Graham Capper close behind in 150th spot in a time of 43.09. Davy Darroch ran a much more steady race this week and he looked much more comfortable than usual when he finished 162nd in a time of 43.53. Making up the last of the harrier’s senior men’s team was Malky Gowans, who finished a couple of places behind Davy in 164th place in a time of 44.01.
