Gala Harriers make a splash at Norham
October 2nd, 2004Despite some seriously wet weather, Gala Harriers did not too bad at the Norham 10K on Sunday. The race is unique because it is run in two countries, England at the start, crossing into Scotland and then back into England for the finish. John Borthwick had some very good athletes to run against, with Teviotdale Harrier Dave Cavers and Hunter Bog Trotter Don Naylor in the field. Don ran a brilliant race to record a winning time of 31.44, with Dave and John taking 4th and 5th respectively. John’s time of 35.32 was well outside is best but good enough to give him the 1st over 35’s senior prize.
Mark Bryson ran another strong race despite the hills, the heavy rain, the wind and the lack of a road to run on, to record a respectable 37.21, while Gary Alexander cruised to a fine 37.30 finish and retained the trophy for first under 20 runner.
Jack Knox celebrated his call up to run for the Scottish Veteran’s team to take on the home nations next month, with a fine run of 38.22. His time gave him the over 60’s prize and helped the harriers pick up a few beers as second team, behind winners Morpeth Harriers.
Rob McCrirrick started well but found the conditions and the hill at 8K, a bit tough after his recent injury. Rob ran 39.56 and he was closely followed by Robin Murray who ran 40.06 to finish in 24th position.
Mike Young ran an amazing PB time of 41.36 and was chased all the way by Alan Strain, (running with a Moorfoot Runners vest on); he also recorded a best time of 41.40.
Katy Anderson has never run a competitive 10km race before, so she had no idea what to expect, which was just as well or she might not have run as fast as she did at the start of the race. It came as a pleasant surprise to her to record a very respectable time of 42.45 to take the 2nd ladies prize as well as the prize for being the first female ‘up the hill’. This last prize confused Katy because she thought the whole race had been up hill!
Paul Morris had a good warm up running round the fun run course with daughter Caitlin and it paid off as he recorded a good time of 43.32. Graeme Sutherland was pleased with his time of 45.03 and he was followed home by Lucy Alkin-Young who shouldn’t be too disappointed with her time of 48.29.
