Edinburgh Marathon is a big hit for Gala Harriers

June 13th, 2004

There was a fantastic turn out of harriers at the Syntegra Edinburgh Marathon last week. The harriers had four runners taking part in the full marathon and 24 taking part in the marathon team relay.

There were over 760 teams entered for the relay race, which consisted of four legs, 6 miles, 3 miles, 10 miles and 7miles.

The harriers had 6 mixed teams entered, with their top team of Ron Logan, Suzanne Carson, Neil Renton and Tish Affleck, finishing in second place overall in a time of 2.40.49, beating many of the all male elite teams on the way.

Not to be outdone were the teams of David Hunter, Angela Foss, Derek Fraser, Leanne Haining and Struan King, Graeme Jones, John Patterson, Katy Anderson, who finished 7th and 9th overall in respectable times of 2.58.50 and 2.59.54.

Also finishing in good times were the other three teams of Amy Capper, Tina Hulton, Robin Murray and Graham Capper, recording 3.20.10 in 36th place, Karen Renton, Anne Laurie, Malky Gowans and Eileen Nicol, recording 3.22.34 in 47th place and Neil Aitchison, Linda Little, Mike Young and Rosi Capper, recording 3.32.35 in 89th place.

The full marathon had John Borthwick hoping to run a fast time but it was not to be on the day as the heat and a fast start took its toll on John and he could only finish in a time of 3.10.26.

Finishing with a sprint and a smile on his face was Dave Nightingale, who ran a personal best time of 3.19.03 to finish 135th out of the 7000 plus field of runners.

John Cairns ran a steady marathon despite the heat and was happy to finish in a time of 3.48.03. The only female runner from the harriers taking on the full marathon was Susan Sharp, who ran a great time of 4.30.10 to finish 1541st.
