The Gala Harriers ladies section has had many successes over the past few years, lifting national and district titles at cross-country, road relays and numerous half marathon races.
They can now add the National Marathon Team Championship to their growing list of achievements after Sunday’s race at the Lochaber Marathon.
Laura Howie, Leanne Haining and Rachel Fagan travelled up to Fort William, hoping to get some good times and enjoy the stunning scenery as well as take part in the national championships.
Lining up with more than 350 runners the girls set off at a good pace and ran much of the race together, until the heat, dehydration and fatigue started to tell on Laura and she hit the dreaded ‘wall’ at 21 miles.
Despite this Laura got herself going again and finished with a very creditable time of 3.42.30. Leanne and Rachel were running very strongly and overtook last year’s champion Kate Jenkins, who was running for Carnethy this year, after 22 miles.
Rachel established a small lead over Leanne over the closing stages and finished in a very impressive time of 3.19.50, with Leanne close behind in 3.20.07.
Leanne picked up the 2nd ladies veteran’s prize while Rachel received a prize for the fastest time for a first time marathon runner.
