Kate Jenkins and John Borthwick claimed the Gala Harriers Cross-Country Champion’s title after their efforts at the East District XC Championships at Falkirk on Saturday.

Kate was running for her first claim club Carnethy and put in a superb effort to finish 7th overall in a time of 24.05 over the 6.5-km ladies course. Next harrier home was Rachel Fagan who is just finding her feet in the mud and glaur of cross-country running but finished strongly to take 25th place in a time of 25.54. Laura Howie overcame a bad start and worked her way steadily through the field of 85 runners to eventually finish 34th in a time of 26.26.

Finishing just behind Laura in 37th place was Andrea Pogson in 26.47, followed by Katy Anderson in 47th place in a time of 27.30. Ladies captain Eileen Nicol put in a strong effort to finish 54th in 28.09, which left Angela Foss to complete the harriers team by finishing 60th in a time of 28.36.

Despite the usual handful of call off’s, the Gala men put in one of their best performances in the championships, with one of their strongest teams. First home was Euan Jardine who ran the 10 km course in an excellent time of 35.00 to finish 33rd overall from the 270 strong field of runners.

Fergus Cochrane is on a roll, two races in two weeks and no injuries! Fergus made light work of the underfoot conditions to finish 52nd in a time of 35.54. John Borthwick claimed the harrier’s cross-country title by finishing 70th overall in the race in a time of 37.00 and third home for the harriers in their club XC championship. Fergus Johnston put in a spirited sprint finish at the end of his race in an attempt to catch John but had to be content with 76th spot and a time of 37.15.

Ron Logan was in the unaccustomed position of finishing as the harriers 5th counting team member, when he finished 90th overall in a time of 38.06 and was followed in by David Nightingale in 115th place in a time of 39.05. This left the harriers as 11th team in the senior event and with Robin Murray finishing 153rd in a time of 41.06, the harriers took 8th place in the veteran’s championship. Last runner home for the harrier’s was Malky Gowans who ran well to finish 183rd in a time of 43.40.

In the junior races Gala had two girls running in the Under 15 championship. Sarah Mathers continues to improve, especially as she’s got some cross-country shoes to run in and finished a creditable 13th in a time of 19.34. Sarah was followed by Kirstie Thomson who also ran a good race to finish 21st in a time of 21.31.

Next race for the harrier’s is Round 3 of the Eastern Borders Winter XC Series at Spittal on Sunday 18th of January.
