Fergus Cochrane got new years day off to a fine start, when the Gala Harrier veteran competed in the 4 mile Portobello Promothon race. Fergus is a regular runner in this event, when he’s not injured and he must be hoping for great things in his first veteran year, finishing 11th overall in a time of 21.37 and 3rd veteran.
A large field of 250 runners lined up at the start with Fergus with club mates Mark Bryson running an impressive 22.58 to finish 29th and Kate Jenkins putting in some sprint training and finishing 49th in a time of 24.01. Billy Anderson is running back into form but was disappointed with his time of 24.28, leaving him 56th overall. Gala’s final runner was Ruth McCann who paced herself well to finish in 31.13 and 181st spot.
Kate Jenkins made the short trip down to Broughton the next day to take part in the Broughton Dash hill race. This is a particular favourite of Kate’s where she has been seen running the race in a ball gown and a pair of welly’s in the past. Kate took the race a little more seriously this year to win the ladies race in a new course record.
While Kate was away setting records, a healthy group of 17 Gala Harriers and Lauderdale Limpers took part in the inaugural Southern Upland Way Run from Lauder to Gala. Soup, rolls and a wee nip were waiting at the finish to warm everyone up.
Next race for the harriers is the East District XC Championships at Falkirk this Saturday.
