There was another busy weekend of cross-country running for Gala Harriers, at the National XC Relays in Cumbernauld and in the Winter XC Series at Norham.
Once again the Gala ladies did everyone proud by winning the Silver medal in the Veterans championship and finishing 5th and 12th in the overall race. City of Glasgow stole the show by winning both the overall and veteran’s title with the same team but Tish Affleck, Laura Howie and Suzanne Carson can be proud of their efforts, even if they failed to retain the title they won last year.
Rachel Fagan and Katy Anderson are learning fast about cross-country and with club secretary Angela Foss, they finished an excellent 12th from the 32 teams competing. Karen Renton and Eileen Nicol also ran well but without a third runner, their team could not complete the race.
Kate Jenkins ran for her first claim club Carnethy but was left cursing her luck after a great second leg run. Kate put her team in the lead, only to find that their third runner was not eligible to run because she had not been declared in time and the team was disqualified after finishing second.
Gala men also had three teams running and finished a highly respectable 29th, 44th and 67th, from the 89 teams competing. Ron Logan, running for the ‘A’ team, had to put in a sprint finish to get past ‘B’ team runner Fergus Johnston after the first leg.
Some fine runs from Mark Bryce, John Borthwick and an excellent run from Euan Jardine to claim a top 30 finish for the harriers rewarded his efforts. Fergus was also well backed up by Alastair Laurie, Jack Knox and Dave Nightingale. David Hunter and Malky Gowans got a little help from Ron and Fergus, who obviously liked the course so much they ran it twice, to allow the ‘C’ team to finish 67th.
